Anti-Aging Medicine is the branch of medicine that applies scientific and medical technology to reduce age-related diseases through early detection, prevention and treatment. The goal of Anti-Aging Medicine is to treat the underlying cause of aging to achieve optimal health, regardless of chronological age.
What Causes Aging?
There are a lot of theories about how we age but all of the theories have one main concept in common, aging is the progressive loss of metabolic processes due to biological changes caused by; oxidation, glycation, methylation, chronic inflammation and decreased hormone levels.
Oxidation
Exposure to too many free radicals from pollution, poor diet, and smoking will damage your body’s cells.
Glycation
When sugars attach to proteins causing a cross-linking of proteins. These cross-linked proteins react with free radicals and other toxins creating Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGEs). AGEs accumulate in our 20s and increase as we age causing protein molecules to become stiff and malformed and interferes with DNA. AGEs are a key component of aging and degenerative diseases.
Methylation
Methylation is necessary for the normal maintenance of tissue and keeps DNA and other molecules active and functioning at their peak. It stops the body from forming abnormal DNA and blocks abnormal DNA from being passed on to new cells. Inflammation reduces methylation and low levels of methylation are found in inflammatory diseases such as lupus and diabetes.
Chronic Inflammation
Chronic inflammation damages the body’s cells, tissues and organs leading to DNA damage and tissue death. Chronic inflammation is linked to degenerative disease such as cancer, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, obesity and asthma.
Decreased Hormone Levels
The body produces hormones that communicate between the cells of the body, and control most of the body’s basic functions including, sex drive, immune function, energy, mood, digestion and appetite. Even small changes in a person’s hormone levels can have a big impact on his or her quality of life. As we age, both men and women experience a decline in the production of hormones critical to good health and longevity.
