The natural aging process is associated with sarcopenia, the gradual and progressive loss of muscle mass, muscle strength, and endurance. Such changes have been considered inevitable consequences of aging. Regular exercise, hormone replacement and nutrition can help limit and reverse age-related declines in muscle mass and strength.
Protein is the main building block for muscle. Muscle protein synthesis is the process of building muscle protein. But, to keep our bodies balanced there is also muscle proteolysis, the process for breaking down muscle. As we age muscle proteolysis begins to exceed protein synthesis and we lose muscle mass and strength.
Both exercise and nutrition play a critical role in muscle protein synthesis. It has been suggested that we lose muscle as we age because we no longer respond to protein intake efficiently, impairing our capacity to increase muscle protein synthesis rates.
To test this idea, researchers evaluated the impact of protein consumption, prior to night time sleep, on overnight muscle protein synthesis in older men. Forty-eight men over the age of 70 were enrolled in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial where they consumed 40 mg of protein, 20 mg of protein, 20 mg of protein plus luceine or placebo.
All participants that ingested protein experienced improved night-time muscle protein synthesis compared to the placebo group but the participants that ingested 40 mg of protein prior to bedtime saw the greatest increase. Eating 40 mg of protein prior to going to bed can help maintain muscle mass.
